We are integrating environmental sustainability into our business, better enabling us to realize our purpose of "Working together for a healthier world." We are using our capabilities to mitigate our impact on climate change, improve product stewardship and manage water resources.
Pfizer has a long-standing commitment to environmental, health and safety protection. We are building on the bedrock of successful programs to push sustainable practices throughout our businesses and supplier network. While we continue to emphasize full compliance with legal requirements and are proud of our many accolades, we have developed a clear vision that focuses on where we believe Pfizer can bring additional value. ENERGY AND CLIMATE CHANGE
We are actively driving down our carbon footprint by reducing our greenhouse gas emissions and increasing our energy efficiency. Our work goes beyond our facilities to rethinking the cars our sales force use and the routes they drive.
PRODUCT STEWARDSHIP
Pfizer delivers safe and effective products. We are also working to minimize the potential impact of our products from discovery through use and disposal. We seek innovative ways to reduce our packaging and wastes and look for opportunities to recycle.
CLEAN WATER
We are striving to decrease water use, assessing our global impact and looking for opportunities to expand our responsibility in addressing this world health issue.
With guidance from our stakeholders, we have set near-term and longer-range priorities for executing our environmental strategies. We continue to report on issues and progress toward these priorities, as well as other footprint management measures such as minimizing releases to air and water, reducing waste and increasing recycling efforts.
From 2000 to 2008 we reduced our global greenhouse gas emissions by 25 percent. U.S. Environmental Protection Agency Climate Leaders recognized Pfizer for attaining our first-generation greenhouse gas goal and for our commitment to a second one. For the third consecutive year, we were also named by the Carbon Disclosure Project for our leadership and continued commitment to addressing climate change impact.

Emissions associated with Pfizer's fleet operations contribute about 10 percent to our total carbon footprint. We have established a global reduction target of
5 percent annually and through local efforts are implementing projects to better manage the impact of our nearly 39,000 automobiles. So far, we have identified the greatest potential to immediately reduce Pfizer's fleet footprint in selecting the appropriate vehicle and engine size for its intended use—the right vehicle for the right job.
Pfizer recognizes public concerns about trace amounts of medicines found in water, known as Pharmaceuticals in the Environment (PIE). Pfizer adheres to the principles of responsible product stewardship and we have increased our commitments and stepped up initiatives to tackle the complex issues associated with PIE. We continue to engage with the scientific community, policymakers, patient groups and nongovernmental organizations aggressively advancing the body of knowledge concerning PIE. We are partnering with other pharmaceutical companies and government agencies to further explore unused medicine disposal options and, in parallel, evaluating the potential environmental impact of active pharmaceutical ingredients from our manufacturing operations.
Pfizer is taking advantage of nature's own chemical catalysts, enzymes, through biocatalysis. In the making of Lyrica, the enzymatic synthesis of pregabalin will save more than 200,000 metric tons of chemical waste between 2007 and 2020. The new biocatalytic synthesis process for the manufacture of Lipitor will eliminate the need to use materials such as Raney nickel solution and butyl lithium solution.
