Pfizer has a reach that no other science-based health care company can match. Through our vaccines and other biopharmaceutical products, pharmaceuticals, consumer health care products, nutritionals, capsules and animal health products, we touch people's lives at every stage. We fight sickness and foster well-being with everything from preventive vaccines, to vitamins and medicines for self-care, to some of the most sophisticated treatments for threatening diseases such as cancer and resistant infections. We help people care for their pets and keep the world's food supply strong in the face of a growing global population.
Pfizer sees human health care in the broadest sense—and the most specific. We are helping everyone from governments to individual patients navigate the changing world of health care. Our knowledge of our products and the health care environment equips us to help society make the most of its current investment in health care, meeting the needs of patients and their families today.
At the same time, we are working to help shape health care systems of the future, focusing on prevention, early diagnosis and wider access to needed treatment.
In the developing world, we are a force for expanded access and improvements in health care delivery. We are strong in emerging markets, the fastest-growing segment of our global biopharmaceuticals business. We invest in communities. Through our Global Health Fellows program, as one example, Pfizer colleagues with specialized skills volunteer for three-to-six-month assignments with nongovernmental, multilateral and community-based organizations on the frontiers of health care delivery for underserved populations. Overall, Pfizer is working in partnership with patients, caregivers, physicians, payers, health ministries and local health care providers around the world, leaving them better equipped to meet their most basic challenge—keeping people healthy.
Our philanthropic global health programs invest in the creation of innovative solutions to the most critical global health issues confronting the world's most underserved people. Since 2003, more than 230 Global Health Fellows have devoted nearly 200,000 hours of volunteer service working with community, nongovernmental and multilateral organizations in 39 countries. On these assignments, Pfizer colleagues train and support their local counterparts, transferring skills to make a long-term impact. The program has been recognized by peer companies and by the United States Corporation for National and Community Service for leadership and excellence in pro bono skills-based corporate volunteering.
The International Trachoma Initiative (ITI) was created in 1998 to support the World Health Organization's effort to eliminate blinding trachoma, the world's leading cause of preventable blindness, by the year 2020. Founded by Pfizer and the Edna McConnell Clark Foundation, the ITI, is a nonprofit organization under The Task Force for Global Health which manages Pfizer's donation of Zithromax to support an integrated public health strategy focused on elimination. To date, the program has provided roughly 190 million treatments of Zithromax to people in 18 countries. In 2009 alone, Pfizer provided close to $1 billion of medicines and financial support to the ITI. This donation has served as a catalyst to enable a global alliance of committed partners to leverage resources and support to perform hundreds of thousands of surgeries to treat advanced cases of trachoma, implement hygiene and facial cleanliness education programs, and provide infrastructure for water provision and sanitation in trachoma endemic areas. The ITI's partners include the World Health Organization, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, governments, nongovernmental organizations, corporations, the Carter Center, Lions Clubs and UN agencies including UNICEF.
Our goal is to connect select Pfizer colleagues with programs to help improve health and health care systems for the underserved around the world.
