Product Packaging

Pfizer is dedicated to collaborating across our supply chain to reduce the environmental footprint of our products, including product packaging, throughout their lifecycles. To do so, we aim to leverage innovative and functional packaging materials, designs, and systems that minimize our impact on the environment, while providing benefits to our patients and maintaining high quality standards.

In particular, we aim to:

  • Eliminate and reduce packaging materials as regulations allow and technology enables for existing products.
  • Minimize and optimize packaging materials and designs for new product launches.
  • Select packaging materials of construction that:
    • lower greenhouse gas (GHG) emission profiles;
    • minimize chemicals of concern; and
    • maximize recycled materials.
  • Implement take-back programs for packaging with suppliers to contribute to the circular economy.

Notable actions we're undertaking include:

  • Collaborating internally and with Pfizer’s suppliers with regard to packaging and device materials to help deliver Pfizer’s Net-Zero and Sustainable Medicines goals
  • Using an internal Life Cycle Assessment tool to allow our internal package designers to calculate potential environmental impact of package designs.
  • Participating in industry groups to collaborate with industry partners to develop and align on optimal solutions.
