To fully realize Pfizer’s purpose – Breakthroughs that change patients’ lives – we have established a clear set of expectations regarding “what” we need to achieve for patients and “how” we will go about achieving those goals.
Pfizer Research & Development serves as the beating heart of Pfizer's trailblazing product pipeline, the essence of our mission to bring life-changing medicines to the world.
Pfizer’s purpose is to deliver breakthroughs that change patients’ lives. Pfizer Vaccines Research and Development is at the heart of fulfilling Pfizer’s purpose as we work to translate advanced science and technologies into vaccines that matter most. You will apply cutting edge design and process development capabilities to accelerate and bring the best-in-class vaccines to patients around the world.
What You Will Achieve
The primary purpose of Senior Scientist – Bacterial Immunology (PhD only) job is to provide expertise and support in assay development and immunology for early-stage bacterial vaccine programs. The incumbent will apply skills in immunology and host-pathogen interactions to design assays and experiments to aid the selection of vaccine candidates and generate preclinical data to validate and support proof of concept for novel vaccine candidates and formulations/platforms (e.g. subunit, polysaccharide conjugate, mRNA vaccines, novel adjuvants). Accordingly, the candidate should have experience with associated cell-based and immunological in vitro assays that measure the host response to the infecting pathogen. Experience in ex vivo assays to monitor and evaluate infection and immune responses in animal models is preferred. The incumbent may also collaborate with microbiologists to answer program critical questions about host-pathogen interactions. A strong focus on hands-on experimental work as individual contributor at the lab bench is expected. In addition to contributing individually, the scientist may supervise the activities of junior colleagues (formally or informally) and lead research projects.
The successful candidate will have a unique opportunity to work with a multidisciplinary team on a wide range of vaccine immunology research projects. Excellent communication skills and the ability to work a multifunctional matrix environment are essential for the success of this candidate. This is an exciting opportunity for candidates with strong critical thinking skills and who wants to work in a robust collaborative environment. The candidate will be expected to conduct experiments in the wet lab, manage laboratory and data analysis responsibilities to achieve team goals.
How You Will Achieve It
Use knowledge of immunology to develop and execute in vitro assays to measure immune responses to immunization and understand vaccine mechanism of protection (e.g. total antibody binding, functional assays, T-cell assays).
Development ex vivo assays to support animal model development (e.g. assays to measure biomarkers of infection)
Provide expertise and hands-on support in immunology and host-pathogen interactions for bacterial vaccine programs.
Plan and execute complex experiments to further project goals. Research, plan and conduct experiments to evaluate immune responses to vaccination and mechanism of protection.
Lead collaborations with cross functional groups e.g. in vivo and clinical assay teams.
Contribute original ideas and participate in project planning for individual and team goals.
Independently design, develop and characterize serological assays.
Interpret and summarize experimental data. Research and design experiments to resolve technical problems. Present original data at internal and external scientific meetings.
Stay current in research tools and emerging approaches to evaluate immune responses to vaccination and host-pathogen interactions by keeping up with relevant literature and attending scientific meetings.
Maintain laboratory notebook in a detailed and descriptive manner.
Satisfactorily completes all cGMP/GLP and safety training in conformance with departmental requirements.
Electronic documentation of lab work in a detailed fashion, summarizing and reporting data in an organized fashion.
Prepare results for presentation, inclusion in technical reports, and for publication in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
The incumbent has training on required Policies, Practices, and Procedures needed to support their work. Other technical training on job-specific tasks may be required.
Must have
PhD in immunology, microbiology, or host-pathogen interactions with a minimum of 2 years of relevant post-graduate experience with demonstrated data analysis skills and strong publication record is required.
Hands on experience with in vitro assays to measure immune responses: IgG binding assays, opsonophagocytic assays, neutralization assays.
Knowledge of T-cell immunology and experience running relevant assays, including experience with multicolour flow cytometry and FACS sorting to measure and analyze immune responses. Ability to effectively manage, organize and prioritize multiple projects and meet deadlines.
Excellent critical thinking, communication and organizational skills.
The position requires strong analytical, quantitative and leadership skills in addition to exceptional multi-tasking capabilities and organizational skills.
Incumbent must be able to effectively communicate complex ideas and concepts through excellent writing, oral presentation and teaching skills.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and relevant scientific software, including graphing/statistical analysis tools is required.
Nice to have
Knowledge of human and murine immunology.
Experience with animal models of infection and ex vivo assays to measure biomarkers of infection.
Hands on experience with development of serological assays.
Experience designing and interpreting experiments using T- and B-cell receptor sequencing, single cell RNA-seq.
PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS
Lifting, sitting, standing, walking, bending
Ability to perform mathematical calculations and ability to perform complex data analysis
NON-STANDARD WORK SCHEDULE, TRAVEL OR ENVIRONMENT REQUIREMENTS
May require occasional non-standard work schedule e.g. dependent on experiments

Research and Development
Breakthroughs that change patients’ lives
Research confirms what intuition tells us: that purpose-driven companies perform better, are more innovative, attract and retain the best people, and know how to unleash the power of those people. Pfizer’s purpose—Breakthroughs that change patients' lives—fuels everything we do and reflects our passion for building on our legacy as one of the greatest contributors of good to the world.
Each word in our purpose has meaning and reflects the value we strive to bring to patients and society:
“Breakthroughs” - These are the innovations, scientific and commercial, that we seek to deliver every day. All colleagues, regardless of role, level or location, strive for breakthroughs every day.
“Change” - We want to do more than simply improve patients’ medical conditions; we want to dramatically change their lives for the better.
“Patients’ lives” - We consider not only patients, but everyone they touch—including their families, caregivers, and friends—and everything they love to do. It’s an intentionally holistic view.
Our purpose ensures that patients remain at the center of all we do. We live our purpose by sourcing the best science in the world; partnering with others in the healthcare system to improve access to our medicines; using digital technologies to enhance our drug discovery and development, as well as patient outcomes; and leading the conversation to advocate for pro-innovation/pro-patient policies.
Every decision we make and every action we take is done with the patient in mind—and to nurture an environment where breakthroughs can thrive.
Our Values
To fully realize Pfizer’s purpose, we have established a clear set of expectations regarding “what” we need to achieve for patients and “how” we will go about achieving those goals.
The “how” is represented by four simple, powerful values—courage, excellence, equity, and joy—that define our company and our culture.
Courage: Breakthroughs start by challenging convention, especially in the face of uncertainty or adversity. This happens when we think big, speak up, and are decisive.
Excellence: We can only change patients’ lives when we perform at our best together. This happens when we focus on what matters, agree who does what, and measure our outcomes.
Equity: We believe that every person deserves to be seen, heard, and cared for. This happens when we are inclusive, act with integrity, and reduce healthcare disparities.
Joy: We give ourselves to our work, but it also gives to us. We find joy when we take pride, recognize one another, and have fun.
